Healing and Incarceration"If you really want to rehabilitate . . . you have to find a way to help the man find his dignity and purpose as an individual . . ." - from The Birdman of Alcatraz In the autumn of 2012, I connected to my passion in the field of Restorative and Transformative Justice. I focused my academic writing on the topic of health and healing in incarceration, wrote my thesis on transformation during incarceration, and completed an internship with the Insight Garden Program at San Quentin State Prison. Although my volunteer efforts are currently at a minimum, I hope to be more active in this field when my other creations require less attention. I am a certified Path of Freedom facilitator through Prison Mindfulness Institute. More on the subject There is a misconception that if you punish people hard enough, they will no longer commit the acts you are punishing for. The current judicial system in the United States harms people who harm people to teach not to harm people. Those who are labeled offenders carry their own wounds. Rather than punishment, they need a place to heal... Healing and transformation can emerge through regaining confidence in their own basic or innate goodness, the innate goodness of others and life as a whole and a greater overall sense of possibility and positive vision for their present lives and future. Restorative and Transformative Justice focus on coming together as a community to focus on mending broken lives - whether they are considered offender or victim, and finding ways to meet the needs and obligations that arise from harm. |
